Freiburg eye historic European progression against Celta Vigo
SC Freiburg will attempt to secure a place in their first European semi-final on Thursday when they defend a commanding 3-0 first-leg lead away to Celta Vigo in the Europa League quarter-finals. Julian Schuster's side produced a dominant performance on home soil last week, with the LaLiga outfit offering little resistance and coming close to conceding a fourth. The German club now stands on the brink of making history, though their away form this season presents a significant caveat.
Despite the comprehensive advantage, Freiburg's record on the road in Europe this campaign has been poor. According to tournament statistics, their only victory away from home came against Nice on matchday four, and they failed to score in each of their last three European travels, including defeats in Lille and Genk. This contrast in form adds an element of tension to the second leg, even with the substantial buffer from the first encounter.
The team carried some momentum into the fixture with a 1-0 Bundesliga win over Mainz on Sunday, secured by a goal from Lucas Höler, who also came close to scoring in the first leg against Celta. That result solidified Freiburg's hold on fifth place in the domestic table, maintaining a seven-point gap over Mainz and keeping them within reach of the Champions League positions. Their focus, however, is now squarely on completing the job in Spain.
Celta Vigo, meanwhile, approach the match following a surprising 3-0 home defeat to bottom-placed Real Oviedo in LaLiga, a match in which manager Claudio Giràldez rotated his squad. The loss did not cost them their sixth-place standing due to other results, but it highlighted potential vulnerabilities. The Spanish side faces a monumental task to overturn the deficit and salvage their European campaign.
Freiburg have a minor concern regarding midfielder Johan Manzambi, who was forced off in the weekend match. Schuster expressed hope that the Swiss international would be fit, but with his direct replacement, Patrick Osterhage, out for the season, veteran Nicolas Höfler is on standby for a potential start. A semi-final berth would represent the pinnacle of Freiburg's steady rise in European competition and mark a landmark achievement for the club's project under Schuster.
