Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt has stated his intention to remain with the Portuguese club next season, despite reported interest from Arsenal. The 20-year-old Denmark international revealed his desire to play Champions League football with Porto, effectively ruling out a move this summer.
Froholdt joined Porto last year from Copenhagen for a fee of €20 million and has quickly become a key player for Francesco Farioli’s side. This season, he has made 50 appearances across all competitions, contributing eight goals and six assists from a central midfield position. His performances were instrumental in Porto securing their 31st Portuguese league title.
Recent reports, according to Sky Sports, indicated that Arsenal had formally expressed their interest in signing Froholdt, with Porto potentially willing to sell for a fee of €60 million, significantly below his €85 million release clause. The Gunners were seen as a strong contender for his signature, but Froholdt’s comments suggest he is not currently considering a transfer.
Speaking to A Bola, Froholdt was clear about his commitment to Porto. “In football you can never promise anything, you can never predict the market. But what I want is to stay here. That is the plan,” he said. He further emphasized his desire to experience Champions League football with the club, stating, “I would love to play in the UEFA Champions League with this badge.”
While acknowledging he has ambitions to play for one of the world’s best clubs in the future, Froholdt stressed his current happiness at Porto and his focus on performing for the team. He dismissed having a specific “dream” club, choosing instead to concentrate on his development within the Portuguese league. This decision effectively ends Arsenal’s pursuit of the player, at least for the current transfer window, and allows them to focus on alternative midfield targets.
Froholdt’s commitment to Porto is a boost for the club as they prepare for a Champions League campaign, and it demonstrates a loyalty that is increasingly rare in modern football.
