Gianluca Gaetano has joined Atalanta from Cagliari on a permanent transfer for a fee of €12 million, becoming the first signing under new manager Maurizio Sarri. The 2000-born midfielder arrives after a successful season with the Sardinian club, where he demonstrated his playmaking abilities.
Sarri highlighted the acquisition as a “great gift” from sporting director Giovanni Giuntoli, anticipating Gaetano’s role within the team’s tactical framework. While acknowledging the season ahead will be long and require tactical flexibility, Sarri envisions Gaetano as a key figure in dictating the tempo of midfield, likely within a 4-3-3 formation. The coach specifically noted the player’s adaptation from an attacking midfielder to a deeper-lying regista, a transformation overseen by former Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane.
Last season, Gaetano featured in 32 matches across all competitions for Cagliari, scoring two goals and providing four assists. His contributions, however, saw a slight decrease in fantasy football points as he adjusted to a more defensive role. He received four yellow cards throughout the campaign, but no red cards, indicating a generally disciplined approach to the game. He is considered a reliable presence in midfield, capable of consistently delivering solid performances.
The midfielder is already integrating into Sarri’s system during pre-season training, focusing on both horizontal and vertical passing to control the flow of play. Competition for a starting position at Atalanta will be fierce, particularly with the team transitioning to a back four formation. Currently valued at 16 credits in fantasy football, Gaetano will need to earn his place in the starting eleven, but his potential for improvement within a stronger squad is significant.
