Galatasaray are pursuing Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg. The Turkish Super Lig leaders have identified Fernandes as their ‘ultimate dream target’ and intend to initiate further contact with his representatives following initial discussions in January.
Fernandes has been in excellent form for United this season, registering eight goals and a league-leading 20 assists in 34 matches. His assist tally ties him with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne for the most in a single Premier League campaign. The Portuguese midfielder’s current contract at Old Trafford is set to expire in June 2027, prompting speculation about his long-term future, which he has indicated he will assess after the World Cup.
Despite Galatasaray’s interest, securing Fernandes will be a significant challenge. Plettenberg reports that the player is enjoying his football under manager Michael Carrick, and United’s likely qualification for the Champions League is expected to be a key factor in retaining him. The club are also planning to offer Fernandes new contract terms as part of a wider effort to secure the futures of key players following Kobbie Mainoo’s recent extension.
United reportedly have a £150 million budget allocated for midfield reinforcements this summer, and are expected to sign Carlos Baleba for £80 million. Strengthening the midfield is seen as crucial to supporting Fernandes and challenging for the Premier League title within two years. Carrick’s decision to restore Fernandes to the number 10 role has been credited with improving his performance, and is a factor in the club’s consideration of a permanent appointment for the manager.
Meanwhile, talkSPORT presenter Adrian Durham suggested that Fernandes winning the PFA Player of the Year award would be a “total joke”, claiming he does not play enough games compared to other contenders like Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.
