Alejandro Garnacho is poised to leave Chelsea after just one season, with Roma emerging as the frontrunner for his signature. The 22-year-old has been transfer listed by the club and did not participate in Xabi Alonso’s first training sessions as manager, according to the Daily Mail. Garnacho joined Chelsea last summer from Manchester United for a fee of €46 million (£40m) but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, scoring eight goals in 43 appearances across all competitions.
Chelsea are reportedly seeking a fee of €50 million (£42m) for Garnacho, should he move to a club outside of the Premier League, as confirmed by transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. For Premier League clubs, the asking price is set slightly higher at €52 million (£45m). Roma are interested in a loan deal, but Chelsea are prioritizing a permanent transfer as they look to reshape their squad and balance their finances.
The need for sales stems from Chelsea’s significant financial losses, reported at €306.2 million (£262.4m) for the year ending June 30, 2025 – the largest ever recorded by a Premier League club. The club has already generated revenue through the sales of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for an initial €55 million (£46m) and Tyrique George to Everton for up to €28 million (£24m). A deal worth €58 million (£50m) for Andrey Santos to join Manchester United is also reportedly close to completion.
Despite the need to sell, Alonso has already been backed with the signing of Marco Palestra from Atalanta for €55 million (£46m). The club is also targeting reinforcements in several positions, including a centre-back and a left-back, with Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix and Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarria identified as potential targets. Garnacho’s departure would free up funds and squad space as Alonso aims to build a competitive team for the upcoming season. His sale represents a step towards financial stability for Chelsea and allows Alonso to further refine his squad.
