Gennaro Gattuso has been officially presented as the new manager of Lazio, outlining his vision for the club and identifying key areas for improvement during a press conference on Thursday. The former AC Milan and Napoli manager expressed his pride at taking the role and acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating the need for hard work and a strong team spirit.
Gattuso emphasized his intention to build a team that plays attractive, winning football and reconnects with the fanbase. He indicated a desire to implement a higher pressing style than that of his predecessor, Maurizio Sarri, while also recognizing Sarri’s qualities as a coach. A priority for Gattuso is finding a replacement for defender Patric, who has moved to Milan, though he has requested patience to assess the current squad before making any decisions.
The new Lazio manager confirmed the need for a central defender in the transfer market and acknowledged uncertainty surrounding goalkeeper Ivan Provedel’s future. He highlighted the presence of Marco Mandas and Alessandro Motta as existing options in goal. Gattuso also stressed the importance of shielding the team from the current negative atmosphere surrounding the club, focusing instead on professionalism and dedication.
Gattuso’s managerial career has seen him take charge of clubs in Spain, France, and Croatia following a distinguished playing career. His recent stint as manager of the Italian national team ended in disappointment, a subject he addressed during the press conference, expressing his frustration at the manner of their exit. He is now eager to return to club management and rebuild his reputation with Lazio.
The former Italy international also commented on the absence of club president Claudio Lotito from his presentation, suggesting it was a sign of respect. Gattuso believes a period of assessment is needed before setting ambitious targets, acknowledging that Lazio currently lag behind several other Serie A teams. He stated the club must be strategic in the transfer market, avoiding unnecessary purchases and focusing on quality additions. His immediate aim is to foster a strong mentality within the squad and create a cohesive team environment.
