Bruno Genesio is emerging as the leading candidate to become the new manager of Olympique de Marseille, according to reports in L’Équipe. The potential appointment comes amid significant changes at the club, with Habib Beye currently still in his position, but facing increasing speculation about his future.
Marseille are undergoing a restructuring following a disappointing season that resulted in missing out on Champions League qualification and financial difficulties. The club recently saw the departures of Pablo Longoria, Medhi Benatia, and Roberto De Zerbi, and are seeking a stable project and positive dynamic. New president Stéphane Richard will officially take office on July 3rd, with Grégory Lorenzi expected to join as sporting director, though administrative issues are currently delaying his arrival.
The new leadership, backed by owner Frank McCourt, are reportedly prioritizing a French manager with experience in Ligue 1, seeking stability and a proven track record. Genesio, 59, fits this profile, having previously managed Rennes and Lille, as well as a lengthy spell with Lyon. A graphic shared on social media by Stats Foot highlighted Genesio’s strong win percentage at Lille, ranking him among the club’s most successful managers in recent history.
Genesio’s recent success with Lille, where he led the team to a top-eight finish in the Champions League and a fifth-place finish in Ligue 1, has further enhanced his reputation. He has demonstrated an ability to compete with top European managers and implement an attractive, attacking style of play, which is expected to appeal to the Marseille fanbase. He was also named Ligue 1’s best manager in 2021-2022 while at Rennes.
Despite past criticisms and a reputation for a lack of longevity at clubs – never staying longer than three and a half years at Lyon – Genesio has evolved as a manager, adapting his approach and acknowledging his own areas for improvement. He has spoken of his willingness to tailor his tactics to the specific context of a club and the players available, a quality that could be valuable in navigating the challenges at Marseille. The club’s history of short managerial tenures since Rudi Garcia may be a concern, but Genesio’s experience and tactical flexibility position him as a strong contender to lead the team forward.
