Genoa are considering a move for Francesco Acerbi, who will be a free agent when his contract with Inter Milan expires on June 30th, according to reports in Italy. The Serie A club are evaluating the possibility of signing the experienced defender to bolster their defensive options ahead of next season.
Inter have decided not to renew Acerbi’s contract, making the 36-year-old available on a free transfer. Genoa’s coach, Daniele De Rossi, is reportedly keen to strengthen his backline, and sees Acerbi as a potential partner for Kostas Ostigard, who was recently signed permanently from Rennes, and captain Diego Vasquez. The club are hoping to add Acerbi’s experience to a relatively young defensive unit.
Monza have also registered their interest in Acerbi, initiating contact with his agent, Federico Pastorello. Pastorello previously brokered a deal to bring Diego Milito to Genoa, and could play a key role in any potential transfer. However, Genoa are currently leading the chase for the veteran centre-back.
Alongside interest from within Italy, Acerbi has also attracted attention from clubs in the Saudi Pro League. While a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia could tempt the player, his preference to remain in Italy could favour a move to Genoa or Monza. The decision will largely depend on Acerbi’s desire to continue competing at a high level in Europe, or pursue a financially rewarding end to his career in Saudi Arabia.
Acerbi has been a consistent performer for Inter since joining the club in 2022, making 36 appearances in all competitions this past season. He previously spent several seasons with Lazio, establishing himself as a key figure in their defence. His arrival at Genoa would provide a significant boost to their squad as they aim to consolidate their position in Serie A. The addition of a player with Acerbi’s pedigree could be vital for De Rossi’s project at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
