Germany are nearing qualification for the next stage after a dominant 7-1 victory over Curaçao, but their upcoming match against Ivory Coast presents a significant challenge to secure top spot in Group E. Both teams won their opening fixtures, with Ivory Coast overcoming Ecuador in a closely contested match.
The Ivorian victory was largely thanks to the performance of 18-year-old Yan Diomande, who joined RB Leipzig from Leganes last July. Leganes had initially sought €20 million for the young player, who had made a handful of appearances in La Liga, including a debut against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Leipzig took a chance on Diomande, and are now reportedly considering offers five times that amount. Sky Sports reports that Leipzig are demanding between €100 and €130 million for the winger, with Liverpool among the interested parties.
In response to Diomande’s threat, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has experimented with a five-man defense in training. This tactical adjustment aims to provide extra protection on the flanks, forcing Diomande to overcome two defensive barriers instead of one during his runs towards the center. Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé may also opt to start Amad Diallo, the former Atalanta player, to add further attacking impetus from the wings.
Germany boast a formidable attacking lineup, featuring Kai Havertz, Jamal Musiala, and Florian Wirtz supporting the attack, with Kevin Undav and Woltemade providing further options. Against Curaçao, Havertz scored twice, with Musiala and Undav also finding the net. The combined cost of Havertz, Wirtz, and Woltemade to their current Premier League clubs – Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle respectively – exceeds €250 million. Leroy Sané also represents a significant investment for Bayern Munich, while Musiala is considered priceless.
Following their opening win, calculations suggest Germany have a 99% chance of progressing, even with potential defeats in subsequent matches. A victory against Ivory Coast would guarantee qualification and allow Nagelsmann to rotate his squad for their final group game against Ecuador. Ivory Coast also stand to benefit from a win, solidifying their position and conserving energy. Diomande’s journey from Abidjan to Leipzig, marked by hardship and personal loss – including the passing of his sister – has fueled his determination, and Germany are wary of his potential impact.
