Gerrard advocates for Liverpool to re-sign Luis Diaz from Bayern Munich
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has publicly called for his former club to pursue a sensational return for winger Luis Diaz from Bayern Munich this summer. Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard identified the Colombian as a player he misses watching at Anfield and suggested he could be part of a double signing to address the club's attacking needs.
Gerrard's comments come amid widespread acknowledgment that Liverpool require significant reinforcement in wide areas following the departure of Mohamed Salah and a difficult 2025/26 season. The 29-year-old Diaz, who left Liverpool for Bayern Munich in a major transfer, has enjoyed a prolific individual campaign in Germany, registering 23 goals and 18 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.
When discussing potential targets, Gerrard also lavished praise on Bayern Munich teammate Michael Olise, describing him as a nightmare for defenders due to his two-footed ability. However, Gerrard conceded that prying Olise from the Bundesliga giants would be difficult. "Why would he leave Bayern?" Gerrard asked. "A big club, challenging for the big honours... I don’t think he’s going anywhere. But, yes, would I love him at Liverpool. And you know what, I wouldn’t mind Diaz back as well. I’m missing him."
The sentiment regarding Diaz's absence is shared by other former Liverpool players. Emile Heskey told aGamble that the current squad lacks the specific qualities Diaz provided on the left flank. Heskey pointed to the relentless pressing, direct dribbling, and defensive disruption that Diaz and former star Sadio Mane offered, suggesting current option Cody Gakpo is a different profile of player better suited to a central role.
Liverpool's recruitment strategy is taking shape under pressure after a disappointing title defence. According to reports, the club has a broad agreement with defender Ibrahima Konate on a new contract, easing concerns in central defence. The focus is now squarely on the attack, with RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande also named as a leading target, though Olise is considered a dream signing.
Gerrard's endorsement carries significant weight at Anfield, though it remains unclear if the club's hierarchy will act on his public recommendation. Any move for Diaz would likely command a substantial fee, given his form and the fact Bayern Munich have no obvious incentive to sell. The potential transfer is further complicated by reported internal discussions at Liverpool, including a possible midfield reshuffle involving Real Madrid and ongoing speculation over the managerial position of Arne Slot.
For Bayern, losing Diaz after just one season would represent a surprise, but Liverpool's clear need for a proven, high-energy winger familiar with the club's style makes the link a logical, if ambitious, one. Securing a player of Diaz's caliber would immediately address a key weakness in Liverpool's frontline as they aim to rebuild for a stronger campaign next season.
