Giaccherini Reflects on Career-Defining Goal Ahead of Milan-Juve Clash
Former Juventus and Italy winger Emanuele Giaccherini has reflected on the 2010 goal against AC Milan that he believes transformed his career, speaking ahead of this weekend's Serie A encounter between the two clubs. In an interview, the retired 38-year-old detailed how scoring for Cesena against a star-studded Rossoneri side launched him into the spotlight and set him on a path to Turin and the national team.
Giaccherini recalled the match at the Stadio Manuzzi, which featured the debut of Zlatan Ibrahimovic for Milan alongside a lineup including Alexandre Pato, Robinho, Andrea Pirlo, and Thiago Silva. He described the 2-0 victory for the newly-promoted Cesena as a dream, admitting the opposing players seemed "unreachable" for someone with his lower-league background. The aftermath, where he was unexpectedly surrounded by the press, made him realize the significance of his performance.
That moment proved pivotal. A strong season with Cesena attracted the attention of Antonio Conte, who had previously tried to sign him for Siena. When Conte moved to Juventus the following year, Giaccherini followed. He acknowledged Conte was the only one who strongly wanted him at Juventus, with the transfer finalized late in the 2011 summer window. After three seasons in Turin, which included three Serie A titles, he moved to Sunderland in the Premier League, a switch he defends as necessary for his career progression at age 27.
Looking at the current landscape, Giaccherini assessed Juventus as the clear best team in Italy ahead of Sunday's match at the San Siro. He praised the work of manager Massimiliano Allegri and the club's project, citing recent contract renewals for players like Weston McKennie, Kenan Yildiz, and Manuel Locatelli as building a strong foundation. He suggested Juventus is better positioned than Milan, or even Inter, for future success.
In terms of transfer strategy, Giaccherini advised his former club to make a major investment in attack, naming Napoli's Victor Osimhen as an ideal, albeit expensive, target. He also identified the goalkeeper position as a weakness this season and suggested Liverpool's Alisson Becker would be a sensational signing. Conversely, he expressed doubts about a potential move for Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski due to his age conflicting with Juventus's youthful squad direction.
Regarding current Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, whose future is often linked with Milan, Giaccherini suggested the relationship in Turin may have run its course. He pointed to Vlahovic's physical issues and a strained rapport with the fans over the past two years, noting the significance of his contract expiring in 2026 without a renewal yet being agreed.
