Juventus forward Cristiana Girelli is currently on loan with Bay FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, a move that occurred in March. The loan is for six months, providing Girelli with an opportunity to experience a different style of football and a highly competitive league. According to a Bay FC team member, Girelli “is already a star!”
Girelli described the NWSL as the most competitive league in the world, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of matches where any team can win. While Bay FC had a slow start, their focus remains on reaching the playoffs. She highlighted the significant difference in atmosphere, noting that stadiums are filled with over ten thousand fans arriving hours before kickoff, creating a vibrant and engaging experience for supporters.
The Italian international is currently in a period of tactical adjustment, transitioning from a familiar environment where she had a deep understanding with her teammates to a new team where building those connections takes time. She acknowledged that while tactical nuance is more central in European football, the NWSL prioritizes intensity, though Bay FC’s English coach is integrating tactical elements.
Through nine appearances, Girelli has contributed more assists (two) than goals, a slight departure from her usual scoring record. However, she explained this is due to a different role as a false nine, requiring a different style of play. The team is now focusing on delivering more crosses and balls into the box, aiming to utilize her attacking instincts. Girelli remains determined to score, acknowledging that’s why she was brought to the club, while still appreciating the value of providing assists.
Girelli spoke fondly of Juventus, describing the club as her “first and great love” and dismissing the move as not an “addio” (goodbye) but rather a temporary departure. She recounted a touching interaction with Alessandro Del Piero, who made a point of attending her final game and receiving her jersey. She also expressed sadness over the departure of Juventus Women’s director, Stefano Braghin, acknowledging his pivotal role in building the team and bringing her to the club initially. Girelli is currently with the Italian national team for World Cup qualifying matches, hoping to secure the necessary points to advance.
