Olivier Giroud is poised to sign a one-year contract extension with Lille, according to reports from L’Équipe and confirmation from club president Olivier Létang. The deal would see the 2018 World Cup winner continue with the Ligue 1 side until his 40th birthday on September 30th. Giroud rejoined Lille in July 2023 after a spell in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles, and has become a key player for the club.
Giroud was Lille’s top scorer this past season with 11 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions, including seven in Ligue 1 and four in the Europa League. His return to France has proven successful, and both player and club are eager to continue their association. Several months ago, Giroud indicated a willingness to extend his career at Lille, stating a decision would depend on his ability to contribute and the club’s satisfaction with his performances.
Létang publicly affirmed the club’s desire to retain Giroud, telling RMC Sport on Monday that the striker “still has the flame, he has the desire and we are convinced that he can still bring us a lot.” Discussions between Giroud and Lille have been ongoing for several weeks, and are reportedly nearing a positive conclusion. No documents have yet been signed, but an agreement is expected imminently.
With 57 international goals, Giroud is the all-time leading scorer for the French national team, surpassing Kylian Mbappé by a single goal. A further season at Lille would mark his 16th European campaign. Simultaneously, Lille are also in negotiations to extend the contracts of Aïssa Mandi, Nabil Bentaleb, and Thomas Meunier, all of whom have deals expiring on June 30th. Giroud’s continued presence will provide valuable experience and attacking threat as Lille look to build on their recent success.
