Borussia Mönchengladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder has refuted reports that Newcastle United have made a €12 million offer for goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas. The claim, initially reported by Bild, suggested Newcastle had approached Gladbach for the 28-year-old. However, Schröder stated firmly that no such offer has been received by the Bundesliga club.
Speaking to Kicker, Schröder was direct in his response: “We have not received any offer for Moritz Nicolas.” He further emphasized the club’s commitment to retaining their first-choice goalkeeper, adding, “We are planning with Moritz 100 percent as our number one.” This statement effectively closes the door on any immediate speculation regarding a potential move to St. James’ Park.
Nicolas has established himself as a key player for Borussia Mönchengladbach since joining from Werder Bremen in 2021. He has been a consistent performer, making 63 appearances across all competitions for the Foals and becoming a fan favourite. His current contract with Gladbach runs until 2029, providing the club with a strong position in negotiations should any future offers arise.
Newcastle United have been actively strengthening their squad following their recent takeover, but appear to be looking elsewhere for goalkeeping options. The Magpies already have Nick Pope as their established number one, and Martin Dúbravka as a reliable backup. A move for Nicolas would have potentially added further competition for places, but Schröder’s comments suggest Newcastle will need to focus their attention on alternative targets.
Borussia Mönchengladbach will be hoping to build on a solid campaign last season, and retaining key players like Nicolas is crucial to their ambitions. The club finished tenth in the Bundesliga, and will be aiming for a European qualification spot next season. Keeping a settled and reliable goalkeeper in their ranks will undoubtedly aid those efforts.
