Philipp Tietz's late winner seals vital Mainz victory over Hoffenheim
Philipp Tietz scored twice as Mainz extended their unbeaten Bundesliga run to six matches with a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Hoffenheim. The striker's second goal, an 79th-minute close-range finish, secured three crucial points that move Urs Fischer's side further clear of the relegation zone.
Tietz opened the scoring after just 13 minutes at the PreZero Arena, rising highest to power a header past Oliver Baumann from Philipp Mwene's cross. The visitors' lead lasted only ten minutes, however, as Fisnik Asllani equalised for Hoffenheim with a stunning strike from the edge of the area after a defensive scramble.
The second half saw Mainz regain control of the contest, with Hoffenheim struggling to create clear chances. Tietz was denied a second goal by Baumann midway through the half, but he eventually found the winner late on. Mwene was again the provider, his cross parried by Baumann straight back to Tietz, who reacted quickest to poke home the rebound.
Hoffenheim came agonisingly close to an immediate equaliser when Wouter Burger's long-range effort struck the inside of the post, but Mainz held firm defensively to see out the win. The result marks another significant step in Mainz's survival bid under Fischer, whose organised side have now taken 14 points from their last six league outings.
For Tietz, the brace takes his Bundesliga tally to eight goals for the season, reinforcing his importance as the focal point of Mainz's attack. His physical presence and aerial threat were central to the game plan, and his late predatory instinct delivered the decisive moment. The 26-year-old has now scored four goals in his last five appearances, finding form at a critical stage of the campaign.
The victory lifts Mainz to 13th place, providing a seven-point cushion over the relegation playoff spot. The team's dramatic improvement in resilience and structure since Fischer's arrival in November has been the foundation of this resurgence. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim's second consecutive defeat damages their aspirations for European qualification, leaving them five points adrift of the top six.
Mainz will look to continue their momentum at home against Bochum next weekend, while Hoffenheim face a difficult trip to face Champions League-chasing RB Leipzig. For Tietz and his teammates, the focus remains firmly on securing their top-flight status, with this hard-earned away win representing another major stride towards that goal.
