Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is attracting interest from both Besiktas and AC Milan ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Mail. The 28-year-old, who has been with Liverpool since 2015, has just one year remaining on his current contract at Anfield.
Milan are reportedly the club Gomez is most interested in speaking with, with the Serie A giants holding a long-standing admiration for the versatile player. The seven-time European champions could offer Gomez a new challenge as he approaches the latter stages of his career.
Gomez has been a consistent performer for Liverpool since joining from Charlton Athletic, featuring under both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp. While he has experienced periods of injury, he has proven to be a valuable asset due to his ability to play at both centre-back and full-back. This versatility is something Liverpool manager Arne Slot may find difficult to replace.
The potential departure of Gomez comes amidst a period of significant change at Liverpool. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are set to leave as free agents, while there is uncertainty surrounding the future of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has been linked with a move to Juventus. Ibrahima Konate’s contract also expires at the end of the season, adding to the defensive concerns.
Speaking recently about his future, Gomez admitted that his situation is uncertain. “I think anything can happen. I don’t know is the honest answer,” he said. “I’ve only got a year left, so I don’t know, but whatever is meant to be will be, I guess. I’m so grateful to have had this time here at this club.”
The Daily Mail’s report suggests Liverpool should consider retaining Gomez, given his experience and adaptability, particularly with Robertson departing and Conor Bradley currently sidelined with injury. His presence would also provide valuable mentorship for incoming defenders Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni. Should Gomez depart, it would further deplete the experience within the Liverpool squad and potentially necessitate further defensive recruitment.
