Liverpool defender Joe Gomez is anticipated to depart Anfield this summer, according to reports from Football Insider and ex-Everton chief executive Keith Wyness. The England international has been linked with a move away from the club for the past two years, largely due to limited playing time under manager Arne Slot.
Injuries have hampered Gomez’s recent seasons, and with his current contract set to expire next year, Liverpool may seek to capitalize on his value while they still can. Wyness stated that Gomez “has been a good servant, but I do think it’s time for Gomez to go,” emphasizing the need for freshness within the Liverpool squad, particularly in defense.
Gomez joined Liverpool from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and has made over 170 appearances for the club, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and other major honors. However, he has struggled to consistently hold down a starting position, often rotating with other centre-backs. Recent reports suggest Serie A side AC Milan are a likely destination for the versatile defender.
The potential exit of Gomez is further complicated by uncertainty surrounding the future of fellow centre-back Ibrahima Konate. Konate’s contract is due to expire next month, but journalist Ben Jacobs reported on Sunday that “clarity on his future is expected imminently.” Konate himself recently claimed he is “close to an agreement” with Liverpool over an extension, stating that both parties are “in a good way.”
Despite Konate’s optimistic comments, delays in finalizing a new contract have raised concerns. A new centre-back is viewed as crucial for Liverpool, especially if Konate also moves on. The club reportedly missed out on signing Marc Guehi previously, highlighting the importance of strengthening the defensive line ahead of next season. Securing defensive reinforcements will be a priority for Slot as he aims to build a competitive squad.
