Barcelona’s recent acquisition of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has become the subject of scrutiny in Spain, with reports suggesting the total cost of the transfer is significantly higher than initially disclosed. The initial reported fee of €80 million for the England international had already marked a substantial investment for the Catalan club, especially as they competed with Bayern Munich and other Premier League teams for his signature.
Barcelona secured Gordon’s services after Bayern Munich hesitated at Newcastle’s asking price, marking the first major signing of their summer transfer window following a return to a more flexible financial model. The move was surprising to many, as Gordon had been heavily linked with a move to the Bundesliga champions for several weeks. The ability of Barcelona to spend such a sum raised eyebrows given their recent financial constraints, particularly as they were simultaneously negotiating a lower fee for Marcus Rashford from Manchester United.
Transfer fees are often subject to speculation and varying reports, with clubs sometimes adjusting figures for public consumption. Complicating matters are the often-hidden costs associated with agent commissions and potential bonus payments embedded within contracts. Recent claims on the Spanish radio station RAC 1, reported by La Razon after consultation with Futbolfinanzas, suggest that the actual cost of acquiring Gordon is closer to €104 million.
This inflated figure stems from an unusually high agent commission of approximately €24 million, representing around 34% of the overall transfer cost—a percentage deemed high even by current market standards. This means Barcelona effectively paid more in agent fees (€24m) in the first year than Gordon’s initial salary (€16m). The revelation adds pressure on Gordon to perform at a high level and justify the significant investment, especially considering Barcelona’s ongoing pursuit of other high-profile targets like Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid. The increased cost also impacts Barcelona’s ability to complete further deals this summer.
