Anthony Gordon may have played his final match for Newcastle United as speculation intensifies regarding a potential transfer to Bayern Munich. The England international has been an unused substitute in Newcastle’s last two fixtures despite being fully fit, leading to questions about his position within Eddie Howe’s squad.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Howe confirmed that the decision to omit Gordon from the starting eleven was influenced by considerations for the future, though he remained tight-lipped on the specifics. “When you get to this stage of the season, part of what we will be doing we'll be looking to next year, naturally, so yes,” Howe stated. He also acknowledged the team’s recent performance in Gordon’s absence, adding, “Anthony’s just come back from injury. I think the team has played well in his absence and with a partial view to the future, yes.”
Gordon joined Newcastle United from Everton in January 2023 for a reported fee of £40 million, quickly becoming a key player under Howe. He has scored 11 goals in 53 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions, establishing himself as a dynamic presence in the forward line. However, his recent exclusion from the team has fuelled reports of a possible move to the Bundesliga.
According to reports, Bayern Munich have initiated discussions with Newcastle regarding a summer transfer for Gordon. While Howe stated he has no new information to share on the matter, he conceded that negotiations could be underway without his direct involvement. “No, nothing, no updates from me. These are discussions that potentially might be happening, but not with me,” he said.
Bayern Munich are reportedly in the market for attacking reinforcements following an underwhelming Bundesliga campaign. The German giants finished second in the league, their first trophyless season in over a decade, and are expected to undergo significant squad changes in the summer. Gordon’s pace, dribbling ability, and goal-scoring threat would likely appeal to Bayern as they seek to revitalize their attack. A move to Munich could offer Gordon the opportunity to compete in the Champions League and further develop his career on a larger stage.
