Leon Goretzka, the 31-year-old German midfielder, has been offered to Atlético Madrid as his contract with Bayern Munich expires this week, according to a report in Diario AS. The move comes as Atlético seek to strengthen their midfield options ahead of the 2026-27 season, with sporting director Alemany leading the search for reinforcements.
Atlético’s recruitment drive has focused on multiple targets, including Aleix García, demonstrating a broad assessment of midfield options under manager Diego Simeone. However, AS clarifies that Goretzka’s representatives have initiated contact with Atlético, rather than the Spanish club making a formal approach at this stage.
There is existing mutual interest between Goretzka and Atlético, as the club reportedly made a bid of €2-3 million for the player in January, which Bayern rejected. Goretzka subsequently chose to see out his contract and become a free agent. Despite this previous interest, a significant obstacle remains: Goretzka’s current salary at Bayern is approximately €15 million gross annually, a figure Atlético are unlikely to match.
Goretzka’s profile could be a valuable addition to Atlético’s midfield, offering physicality, ground coverage, and the ability to contribute in both defensive and attacking phases. He made 48 appearances for Bayern this season, scoring five goals and providing five assists. While his age, 31, is a consideration, Simeone’s system has historically valued experience and tactical discipline over youth in midfield.
Atlético are also considering other midfield targets, including Kang-in Lee and Morten Hjulmand, who is valued at €40-45 million by Sporting CP. This indicates a comprehensive search for quality in the middle of the park, with a need for at least one, potentially two, additions depending on the future of players like Cardoso.
The situation is complicated by the financial realities. While a free transfer for Goretzka eliminates a transfer fee, his wage demands present a significant challenge. Atlético are also exploring options in the Premier League, suggesting a wide-ranging search. Goretzka’s camp is reportedly gauging interest from several clubs, including Juventus and Arsenal, creating a competitive environment.
Bayern Munich have no further involvement in Goretzka’s decision, as his contract has expired. The next step will be whether Atlético can bridge the gap in salary expectations, potentially through restructuring or performance-based incentives. AS suggests that a deal is currently unlikely given the existing financial disparity.
