Robin Gosens is poised to join FC Schalke 04 on a loan deal from AC Florenz, pending a successful medical examination scheduled for Friday, according to reports from Sportschau and WDR. The 32-year-old left-back will initially join Schalke on a temporary basis, with the German club holding a purchase option should they maintain their Bundesliga status.
Should Schalke avoid relegation, they would be obligated to pay a transfer fee of approximately €2.5 million to secure Gosens permanently. The player currently has a contract with AC Florenz that runs until 2028, but has expressed a strong desire to return to Germany and play for Schalke.
Gosens began his career in the youth system of VfL Rhede before joining Schalke’s academy, making the move to Gelsenkirchen a personal ambition. In a March 2025 interview with Kicker, he described Schalke as “the club that got me into football,” indicating a long-held affection for the club. He has been seeking a return to the Bundesliga for some time.
Capped 24 times by the German national team, Gosens brings considerable experience and leadership qualities to Schalke. Manager Miron Muslic is known to value players with strong mental fortitude and the ability to influence the game both on and off the pitch. The move could also provide Gosens with an opportunity to regain the attention of the national team selectors, having last featured for Germany a year ago.
This transfer represents a potentially significant boost for Schalke as they look to strengthen their squad and secure their place in the Bundesliga. For Gosens, it’s a chance to fulfill a long-held ambition and contribute to a club close to his heart. The loan deal provides a low-risk opportunity for both parties to assess the partnership before committing to a permanent transfer.
