Schalke 04 have reached an agreement with Fiorentina for the loan signing of Robin Gosens, with an obligation to buy included in the deal, according to Sky Germany and Fabrizio Romano. The 32-year-old German left-back is expected to complete his move back to the Bundesliga imminently, with the purchase clause reportedly set at €2.5 million, plus performance-related bonuses.
Gosens began his career in Germany, representing VfL Bochum and 1. FC Union Berlin before gaining prominence during a five-year spell with Atalanta. It was in Italy where he established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s most sought-after left-backs, earning a move to Inter Milan in 2022. However, his time at the San Siro proved less impactful, leading to a transfer to Fiorentina last summer.
Last season, Gosens featured prominently for Fiorentina, making 36 appearances across all competitions and contributing seven goal involvements – four goals and three assists. Despite his consistent performances in Serie A, the opportunity to return to his boyhood club proved too appealing for the defender, with reports suggesting he is willing to take a pay cut to secure the transfer.
Schalke, recently promoted back to the Bundesliga after a difficult period in the 2. Bundesliga, are bolstering their squad ahead of the new season. The addition of Gosens provides a much-needed injection of experience and quality to their defensive options, and addresses a clear need at left-back. The club confirmed that Gosens is a lifelong supporter, which is expected to further endear him to the club’s fanbase.
The move represents a significant homecoming for Gosens, allowing him to play for the club he supported as a child. His arrival at Schalke is expected to provide a boost both on and off the pitch, offering leadership and experience to a young squad as they adjust to life back in the top flight.
