Mason Greenwood attended the UNFP Trophies ceremony in Paris on Monday evening, sparking further speculation about his future with Olympique de Marseille. While nominated for the Ligue 1 Player of the Season award – ultimately won by Ousmane Dembélé – the English winger remained ambiguous when questioned about his plans, suggesting a potential departure from the Stade Vélodrome.
Speaking to Africa Top Sports, Greenwood expressed a desire to “hope to stay” with Marseille, but simultaneously lauded the quality of the French top flight. He described Ligue 1 as “a wonderful championship” and stated it is “one of the best leagues I have played in.” It remains unclear whether these comments were directed towards the club’s hierarchy or represent a broader public relations strategy.
Greenwood joined Marseille on a season-long loan from Manchester United in September 2023, following a period of significant off-field controversy. He quickly became a key player for the club, contributing significantly to their attack with eight goals and five assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances. His performances helped Marseille secure a Champions League qualification spot, finishing in seventh place.
However, reports from France suggest Greenwood is not entirely settled in Marseille, with some sources indicating a desire for a new challenge. The club’s internal situation, including changes in management and ongoing uncertainty regarding their sporting director position, may also be influencing his decision. Marseille recently confirmed Habib Beye as their new sporting director, a move that could impact future transfer strategies.
Greenwood’s loan deal with Marseille is set to expire at the end of the current season. Manchester United’s position on his long-term future remains unclear, and a permanent transfer to another club is a distinct possibility. His comments at the UNFP awards ceremony have only intensified the speculation surrounding his next move, leaving his future hanging in the balance.
