Mason Greenwood is increasingly likely to join AS Roma, with negotiations progressing rapidly according to reports in Italy. The 24-year-old winger is nearing the end of his time with Olympique de Marseille, having reportedly finalized arrangements regarding his accommodation in Aix-en-Provence.
Corriere dello Sport reports that Greenwood has reached an agreement with Roma, a factor driven by the opportunity to compete in the Champions League next season. Marseille, meanwhile, can only offer Europa League football, a less appealing proposition for a player of Greenwood’s ambition.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini is reportedly keen to build his team around Greenwood, identifying him as a priority signing for the upcoming campaign. However, the deal is complicated by Marseille’s financial situation and a pre-existing agreement with Manchester United. The French club is mindful of its finances and will not readily accept a lower offer, knowing that 40 percent of any transfer fee will be paid to Greenwood’s former club, Manchester United.
Roma are expected to submit a bid of around €40 million, but this is likely to fall short of Marseille’s €55 million valuation. The French club acknowledges the limited market for Greenwood, whose reputation has been damaged by past allegations of attempted rape and domestic violence, despite those charges being dropped. The club is keen to maximize the return on a player who has been a key performer over the last two seasons.
Alongside Greenwood’s potential departure, reports suggest that Robinio Vaz is also nearing an exit from Marseille. The club is actively reshaping its squad ahead of the new season, and further movement is anticipated before the transfer window closes. This move would provide Greenwood with a platform to rebuild his career and compete at the highest level of European football.
