Michael Gregoritsch has completed a permanent transfer to FC Augsburg after a successful loan spell from Brøndby IF, the Bundesliga club confirmed. The move sees the Austrian international return to the Bavarian side for a fee of €500,000, according to Transfermarkt. Gregoritsch has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further year.
This transfer marks a return to familiar surroundings for the 32-year-old forward, who previously enjoyed a productive spell with Augsburg between 2017 and 2019. His most prolific season came during the 2017/18 campaign, where he scored a personal best of 13 Bundesliga goals. He joined Brøndby in January 2022 after a stint with VfL Bochum.
Gregoritsch’s recent form played a key role in Augsburg exercising their option to secure his services permanently. He enjoyed a strong half-season on loan, registering six goals and three assists in the Bundesliga. Sporting director Benni Weber highlighted Gregoritsch’s leadership qualities and importance to the squad, noting his role as a mentor for younger players and new signings.
“In addition to being a team player and a real leader, Gregoritsch takes up responsibility both on and off the pitch,” Weber said in a club statement. “He's an important point of contact for our young players and new signings in particular, with the experience and support that he is able to provide them. As a result, we are delighted that he will continue to remain a key part of our team.”
Gregoritsch himself expressed his happiness at remaining with the club, stating he feels “extremely at home” at Augsburg and appreciates the trust placed in him. He also noted the benefit of securing his future before the upcoming World Cup. “I feel extremely at home at FC Augsburg, which I've made no secret of,” Gregoritsch said. “I can sense the trust the club has in me and am extremely familiar with the surroundings here.”
Currently, Gregoritsch is just two goals behind Alfreð Finnbogason’s club record of 37 Bundesliga goals. He will be hoping to close that gap and continue his strong form for Augsburg. The forward is also preparing to represent Austria at the World Cup in Qatar, having scored in the last two European Championships. Austria are drawn in Group J alongside Argentina, Jordan and Algeria. His continued presence in Augsburg provides a reliable attacking option for the club as they navigate the Bundesliga season.
