Antoine Griezmann is set to leave Atlético de Madrid for Orlando City in Major League Soccer this summer, bringing an end to a significant chapter in the club’s history. The move, barring any unforeseen circumstances, will conclude Griezmann’s time with the Madrid club after 501 appearances. He is expected to reach the 500-game milestone this Sunday during Atlético’s match against Girona.
The fixture against Girona, while not critical in terms of league standings – Atlético have already qualified for the Champions League – will serve as Griezmann’s farewell to the supporters at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Griezmann holds the distinction of being the first goalscorer at the stadium, which replaced the Vicente-Calderon in 2017, having scored 74 goals at the venue, contributing to his overall total of 212 goals for Atlético. This makes him the club’s all-time leading scorer.
Atlético Madrid have announced plans for a comprehensive tribute to Griezmann “before, during, and after the match,” recognizing his status as the club’s all-time top scorer and a club legend. The club’s statement concluded with a simple, yet poignant, “Goodbye, Antoine!”
Griezmann’s departure marks the end of a second spell with Atlético, having initially joined the club in 2014. He became a key figure in Diego Simeone’s side, known for his versatility and goal-scoring ability, before a move to Barcelona in 2019. He returned to Atlético in 2021, initially on loan, before making the transfer permanent. He has continued to be a vital player for the club, though his recent form has been impacted by injuries.
The move to Orlando City represents a new challenge for the French international, and a significant addition to the MLS. While financial details of the transfer have not been disclosed, it is expected to be a substantial deal, reflecting Griezmann’s stature in the game. The transfer allows Atlético Madrid to reshape their attacking options and potentially invest in younger talent, while Griezmann gains the opportunity to experience a different footballing culture.
