Grillitsch Stunner Secures Draw for Braga Against Real Betis in Europa League
SC Braga and Real Betis played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League last-16 tie on Wednesday night. The Portuguese side took the lead through a spectacular overhead kick from Florian Grillitsch, but a Cucho Hernández penalty ensured the Spanish side earned a 1-1 draw away from home.
Florian Grillitsch opened the scoring for the hosts at the Estadio Municipal de Braga with a moment of pure invention and athleticism. The Austrian international, who joined Braga on a free transfer last summer, executed a spectacular overhead kick to put his side ahead. The goal, a stunning piece of improvisation, gave Braga a deserved lead after a period of early pressure.
Real Betis, managed by former Betis player and fan favorite Rubi, grew into the contest as the first half progressed. Their pressure was rewarded just before the hour mark when Braga defender Jean-Clair Todibo was penalised for a handball inside the penalty area following a VAR review. Cucho Hernández, the Colombian forward on loan from Getafe, stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, slotting the ball into the bottom corner to level the score.
The result leaves the tie finely poised ahead of next week's second leg at the Benito Villamarin in Seville. The away goal rule is no longer in effect in UEFA competitions, meaning the 1-1 draw leaves everything to play for in Spain. Braga will be encouraged by their performance and the vital away goal, while Betis will be confident of finishing the job in front of their home support. The second leg will be played on Thursday, with a place in the Europa League quarter-finals at stake.
