Alejandro Grimaldo is poised to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer, with a return to Spain his preferred outcome, according to reports from journalist Nicolò Schira. Atlético Madrid have emerged as frontrunners for the left-back’s signature, offering him a contract extending until 2029 with an additional option for a year’s extension.
The interest from Atlético has intensified recently, as confirmed by transfer specialist Matteo Moretto. Grimaldo, who has consistently performed at a high level in the Bundesliga, has previously expressed a desire to play in his homeland, making this potential move a natural progression in his career. He joined Leverkusen in 2023 after five seasons with Benfica, where he established himself as a key player, contributing consistently with assists and solid defensive performances.
While Grimaldo is Atlético’s primary target, they are also considering Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella as an alternative. Cucurella, also a Spanish international, is currently under contract with Chelsea until 2029, but reportedly seeks a higher salary than Grimaldo, potentially complicating any deal. The 27-year-old Grimaldo’s lower wage demands could prove decisive for Atlético, who are likely to be mindful of their overall wage structure.
Bayer Leverkusen are preparing for a summer transfer window with an estimated budget of €60 million, as reported by Sport BILD. This figure is contingent on potential player sales, with Grimaldo and Malik Tillman identified as players whose departures could significantly increase the funds available to manager Xabi Alonso. Tillman arrived at Leverkusen last summer but hasn’t fully established himself in the first team, making him a potential candidate for a sale.
Grimaldo’s departure would leave a void at left-back for Leverkusen, though they are expected to seek a replacement. For Atlético, securing Grimaldo would provide competition and quality in a crucial position, potentially strengthening their challenge for both La Liga and Champions League honours.
