Alejandro Grimaldo is on the verge of completing a move from Bayer Leverkusen to Atlético Madrid, with both clubs reportedly close to reaching an agreement. The transfer, first reported by Matteo Moretto, could be finalized as early as Wednesday, according to the journalist.
Negotiations are being conducted in Madrid, with Bayer Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro and sporting managing director Simon Rolfes present for talks after Grimaldo indicated his approval of the potential transfer. Leverkusen had initially valued the left-back at €30 million, as reported by Kicker, though the final fee is anticipated to be somewhat less than that figure.
Grimaldo joined Bayer Leverkusen in 2021 from Benfica, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the Bundesliga side. He contributed significantly to Leverkusen’s impressive campaign last season, providing both defensive solidity and attacking impetus from the left flank. Prior to his move to Germany, the Spaniard spent six years with Benfica, winning multiple league titles and establishing a reputation as one of Portugal’s most consistent performers.
The 28-year-old has consistently expressed his desire to return to Spain before his career concludes, making Atlético Madrid a natural destination. He will likely compete with Javi Galán for the starting left-back position under Diego Simeone, adding depth and quality to the Atlético squad. The move provides Atlético with an experienced European competitor, while Leverkusen will need to identify a replacement for a pivotal member of their team.
Grimaldo’s contract with Leverkusen is due to expire at the end of the current season, which has prompted the German club to consider selling him now rather than risk losing him on a free transfer. This urgency has likely contributed to the willingness to negotiate a fee below their initial valuation. The transfer represents a significant addition for Atlético as they prepare for another challenge in La Liga and the Champions League.
