Albert Grønbæk is set to complete a permanent transfer to Hamburger SV from Stade Rennes, according to a report from Sport BILD. The Bundesliga club will exercise the €5million purchase option in the player’s loan agreement, which is due to expire today, Monday 1 June.
Grønbæk initially joined HSV on loan during the January transfer window and quickly established himself as a key member of the squad. The 25-year-old started each of Hamburg’s last six league matches, contributing one goal and two assists as the team pushed for promotion to the Bundesliga. His versatility in attacking positions proved valuable for manager Tim Walter.
The Dane’s move to Germany followed a period of inconsistent form with Rennes, where he struggled to secure a regular starting role. Grønbæk joined the French club in the summer of 2021 from Aarhus GF, making 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring four goals. However, he found opportunities limited this season, prompting the loan move to Hamburg.
HSV are reportedly prepared to offer Grønbæk a long-term contract, extending until 2030, demonstrating their faith in his abilities. The club finished fourth in the 2. Bundesliga this season, narrowly missing out on a promotion playoff spot, and will hope Grønbæk’s permanent arrival will strengthen their squad for another promotion push next campaign. The transfer provides stability in attack for Hamburg and allows Rennes to recoup a fee for a player who wasn’t a consistent starter.
The quick adaptation of Grønbæk to the German league and his immediate impact on the pitch clearly influenced HSV’s decision to trigger the purchase option. His ability to contribute goals and assists from midfield adds another dimension to their attacking play, and securing his services on a long-term deal represents a significant coup for the club.
