Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the current season, bringing an end to a ten-year spell that has yielded 20 major trophies. The club confirmed the departure on Monday, with Guardiola’s final match at the Etihad Stadium set to be against Aston Villa this weekend.
Guardiola arrived at City in July 2016 and has overseen a period of unprecedented success, transforming the club into a dominant force in English and European football. His trophy haul includes six Premier League titles, an UEFA Champions League crown achieved in the 2022/23 season against Inter Milan, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and three Community Shields. He leaves as the club’s most successful manager in history.
In a video message released by the club, Guardiola explained his decision, stating that “my time is coming to an end.” He emphasized that there wasn’t one specific reason for his departure, but rather a feeling that the moment was right, acknowledging that “nothing is eternal.” Guardiola also reflected on the strong connection he forged with the city of Manchester, praising its working-class spirit and the support he received during difficult times, including the Manchester Arena bombing and the loss of his mother during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Manchester City also announced that despite stepping down as manager, Guardiola will continue to work with the City Football Group as a Global Ambassador. In this role, he will provide technical advice to clubs within the group and contribute to specific projects and collaborations. The club has already identified Enzo Maresca as his replacement on the bench.
Guardiola’s departure marks the end of an era for Manchester City, but his legacy of success and tactical innovation will undoubtedly endure. The appointment of Maresca suggests the club is aiming to maintain its possession-based, attacking style of play, building upon the foundations laid by the outgoing manager.
