Chelsea defender Malo Gusto has stated his desire to play a significant role for France at the ongoing World Cup, despite strong competition for the right-back position. The 23-year-old addressed the media on Wednesday evening, acknowledging the challenge posed by Barcelona’s Jules Koundé, who started in France’s opening match against Senegal.
Gusto emphasized the competitive nature of the squad, stating, “There is competition everywhere. I know that’s the game. The coach will make his choices. I haven’t spoken with him, my role is mainly to be ready. I must remain focused.” He affirmed his commitment to being prepared should head coach Didier Deschamps call upon him.
The former Lyon player is keen to avoid a similar fate to Adil Rami, who was an unused member of France’s victorious 2018 World Cup squad. “It all depends on mindsets. I won’t speak for everyone, but I am on the list, I want to play,” Gusto explained. He believes an opportunity may arise if Koundé fails to recapture his best form during the tournament.
Gusto joined Chelsea from Lyon in January 2023, signing a long-term contract with the Premier League club. He has made a series of appearances for Chelsea, demonstrating his potential as a dynamic full-back. While he has not yet fully established himself as a first-choice starter for either club or country, he possesses the qualities Deschamps may seek as the tournament progresses, particularly given the extended format of this World Cup.
France defeated Senegal 3-1 in their opening match, but Koundé’s performance drew some criticism. Should Koundé’s form continue to dip, Gusto is well-positioned to challenge for a starting berth, adding another dimension to France’s defensive options.
