Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has publicly addressed speculation linking him with a summer move to Bayern Munich, stating he currently has everything he needs at the Premier League club. The comments came while on international duty with Croatia, as reports in Germany intensified regarding Bayern’s interest in the centre-back.
Reports first emerged last month suggesting Bayern were considering a bid for Gvardiol, who joined Manchester City from RB Leipzig in 2023 for a reported £77 million. The 24-year-old has become a key part of Pep Guardiola’s squad, though his first season at the Etihad was disrupted by injury.
Speaking from the Croatian national team camp, Gvardiol acknowledged the circulating rumours but remained non-committal about his long-term future. “There are all kinds of stories coming from everywhere,” he said, as quoted by @CroatiaFooty. “It’s hard to talk about it now.”
Gvardiol emphasized his satisfaction with his current situation at City, particularly highlighting his consistent playing time prior to a recent injury. “I have everything I need at City,” he stated. “Before the injury I was playing every match.” He added that further discussion regarding his future would be deferred until after the conclusion of his international commitments.
The defender still has two years remaining on his contract with Manchester City, giving the club a strong negotiating position should Bayern, or any other suitor, make a formal offer. Gvardiol’s arrival at City was seen as a long-term solution in central defence, and despite initial adaptation challenges, he has largely impressed with his physicality and passing range.
Bayern Munich are known to be in the market for a new centre-back this summer, following the departure of Benjamin Pavard and with concerns over the age profile of their existing defensive options. Gvardiol’s profile – a young, left-footed, ball-playing defender – would seemingly fit their criteria, though City are unlikely to willingly part with a player they invested so heavily in. The situation could evolve depending on any potential offers and Gvardiol’s own ambitions, but for now, he appears focused on his career at the Etihad Stadium.
