Hakan Calhanoglu faces contract crossroads amid Galatasaray interest
Inter midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is approaching a significant decision regarding his future, with his current contract set to expire in 2027 and a potential move to Galatasaray remaining a possibility. According to reports from Italy, the Turkish international, 30, is at a triple crossroads: he could sign a new deal on reduced terms before departing in 2025, see out his contract and leave as a free agent in 2027, or accept a transfer to the Turkish Super Lig champions this summer, should a satisfactory offer arrive.
The situation is complicated by Calhanoglu's vital importance to the Inter squad. Despite battling several injuries this season, limiting him to 20 Serie A appearances with just over half as a starter, his scoring contribution has been notable. With nine goals across all competitions, he is the team's second-top scorer behind only captain Lautaro Martinez. His current scoring rate of a goal every 164 minutes, when on the pitch, represents an improvement over his prolific 2023-24 league campaign, underlining his evolving role in Simone Inzaghi's system.
This consistent output, both in playmaking and goal threat, is a key factor Inter must weigh as they consider his contractual situation. The club's hierarchy is reportedly aware that Galatasaray maintains a long-standing interest in bringing their former academy product back to Turkey. The Turkish giants are expected to test Inter's resolve with an offer in the coming months, though no formal bid has been confirmed at this stage.
Calhanoglu joined Inter on a free transfer from rivals AC Milan in 2021 and has since become a cornerstone of the team, operating successfully in a deeper midfield role. His transformation into a regista, or deep-lying playmaker, has been one of the tactical successes of Inzaghi's tenure, helping the club secure a Scudetto and reach a Champions League final. His potential departure would therefore create a significant void in Inter's engine room, necessitating a costly and complex replacement in the transfer market.
For Galatasaray, signing a star of Calhanoglu's caliber and profile would be a major coup, significantly boosting their domestic dominance and European ambitions. The player's own desire will be pivotal; he must choose between securing a lucrative final major contract in his homeland or continuing his legacy at a club where he is highly valued, albeit potentially on adjusted financial terms. The coming weeks are likely to provide clearer indications of which path Hakan Calhanoglu will choose.
