Hamburger SV are continuing to pursue a permanent deal for Fábio Vieira, but progress is contingent on Arsenal reducing their valuation of the Portuguese midfielder. Vieira spent last season on loan with the Bundesliga 2 side, making a positive impression during his time at the Volksparkstadion.
Negotiations between the two clubs have reportedly stalled due to a significant difference in asking price, with HSV aiming to secure Vieira for a fee below €10 million. Arsenal, however, are understood to be seeking a considerably higher sum for the 24-year-old, who they signed from Porto in 2022 for a reported £34.2 million.
Kathleen Krüger, Hamburg’s recently appointed sporting director, acknowledged the financial disparity, stating that a player of Vieira’s quality falls outside of HSV’s current spending bracket, according to comments reported by multiple outlets. Despite this, the club are not giving up on the transfer, and believe a resolution is possible if Arsenal demonstrate flexibility.
Sport Bild reports that HSV remain optimistic, but their hopes rest on Arsenal accepting a lower offer. The North London club are believed to be open to selling Vieira, as he does not currently feature prominently in Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans. Arsenal may, however, prefer to wait and see if other clubs enter the race, potentially driving up the price.
Vieira made 31 appearances for Hamburg last season, scoring three goals and providing five assists. His performances helped HSV to a seventh-place finish in Bundesliga 2, falling short of promotion to the top flight. Prior to his loan move, Vieira had struggled to establish himself as a regular starter for Arsenal, making 31 appearances across all competitions but often from the bench. A permanent move to Hamburg would offer him the opportunity for more consistent playing time and a central role in a team’s midfield.
Should a deal be agreed, Vieira would likely become a key component of Hamburg’s attempt to challenge for promotion next season. The transfer would also represent a significant step in Krüger’s reshaping of the HSV squad.
