Hamburger SV will not be taking up their option to sign American striker Damion Downs on a permanent basis, according to reports from Sky Germany. The 21-year-old, who joined the Bundesliga club on loan from Southampton in the January transfer window, will return to his parent club when his temporary deal expires this summer.
Downs arrived at HSV with the hope of bolstering their attacking options in their fight against relegation. However, the forward failed to find the net in 11 appearances across all competitions, failing to provide the goalscoring contribution the club desperately needed. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, while the club had no issues with Downs's professionalism and attitude, his on-field output fell short of expectations.
The decision marks another disappointing chapter for Downs in Germany. He initially made his breakthrough with 1. FC Köln, scoring 10 goals in 29 games in the 2. Bundesliga during the 2022/23 season. That form prompted Southampton to secure his signature last summer, but he found first-team opportunities limited in the Championship before his winter loan move to Hamburg. His struggles for consistent form have continued since that promising start at Köln.
For Hamburger SV, the focus will now shift to identifying alternative attacking reinforcements for next season, regardless of which division they find themselves in. The club remains locked in a tense battle to avoid an immediate return to the second tier. For Southampton, Downs’s return presents a fresh challenge. The Saints must now decide whether to integrate the young American into their squad for a Premier League campaign or seek another loan move to aid his development.
The move underscores the often precarious nature of loan deals, particularly for young players moving between leagues. While the option was available, Hamburg’s choice not to trigger the permanent clause was a straightforward footballing decision based on a lack of tangible impact during a critical period. Downs’s immediate future will now be determined by Southampton’s planning for the upcoming season.
