Harry Kane reflects on missed chances after Bayern's crucial win over Real Madrid
Harry Kane has expressed satisfaction with Bayern Munich's performance in their Champions League quarter-final first-leg victory over Real Madrid, while admitting his side could have secured a more commanding lead. The England captain spoke to TNT Sports after Bayern's 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night, a result that gives the German giants a narrow advantage heading into next week's return fixture in Munich.
Kane acknowledged that Bayern's final execution in front of goal was an area for improvement, despite creating several fine chances against the Spanish champions. "I thought we played some really good stuff today, and definitely some things we can improve on as well. Maybe the final ball or finish [could be better]," the striker said. He praised goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for making key saves to preserve the lead, noting that Real Madrid also had their opportunities in a high-quality encounter.
The 32-year-old highlighted the significance of securing a positive result away from home in such a prestigious fixture. "We knew before the game all the hype around it and coming to Madrid and the Bernabéu. Trying to get a result here is always a difficult thing to do," Kane added. The win marks a significant step for Vincent Kompany's team as they aim to reach the semi-finals of Europe's premier club competition.
When asked about the growing understanding within the squad under their first-year manager, Kane struck an optimistic tone. "We've enjoyed some really good moments together this season, obviously we're at the business end of the season now so we're hoping that we can maintain that," he stated. He emphasized that the team's attacking connections continue to strengthen with time, contributing to a consistent threat in front of goal.
Despite the positive outcome, Kane was quick to temper expectations, noting the slender nature of the aggregate lead. "We're in a good position, but as always it's just a one-goal lead and it can change really quick," he cautioned. The striker immediately shifted focus to Bayern's immediate domestic duties, with a Bundesliga match this weekend preceding the decisive second leg. "So now it's just about recovering, focus on that, and then the time will come next week to try and perform like we did today," Kane concluded.
Kane's performance and leadership remain central to Bayern's ambitions in both the Champions League and their pursuit of the Bundesliga title. Having joined from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, the striker has adapted swiftly, becoming the focal point of Bayern's attack. His comments reflect a balanced perspective from a seasoned professional, recognizing the achievement of an away win while understanding the tie remains finely poised ahead of the second meeting at the Allianz Arena.
