Harry Kane reflects on Bayern's 'good chances' after Champions League win
Harry Kane has said Bayern Munich could have won by a greater margin in their Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid. The England captain, who scored 44 goals in all competitions in his debut season in Germany, was pleased with the 2-1 first-leg victory in Madrid but believes his side could have been more clinical. Bayern secured a narrow advantage heading into the second leg at the Allianz Arena next week.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Kane reflected on the opportunities created. "I thought we played some really good stuff today, and definitely some things we can improve on as well," Kane said. "Maybe the final ball or the finish could have been better. We created some fine chances."
The 30-year-old striker, who joined Bayern Munich from Tottenham Hotspur last summer for a fee in the region of €100 million, acknowledged the quality of the opposition and the significance of the away result. He praised the performance of teammate and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who made several key saves to preserve the lead. "Credit to them, they created chances too, but Manu made some really good saves. Overall we can be happy with the win and take it into next week," Kane added.
Kane, who has broken numerous Bundesliga scoring records this season, emphasised the team's collective spirit. He highlighted the growing understanding within the squad under manager Vincent Kompany. "The more you train, the connections get even stronger and we always feel we can score goals," Kane explained. The victory at the Santiago Bernabéu puts Bayern in a strong, but not decisive, position ahead of the return leg in Munich.
Looking ahead, the England captain stressed the need for focus. Bayern must first navigate a Bundesliga fixture this weekend before the return leg. "We're in a good position, but it's just a one-goal lead and it can change quickly," Kane said. The striker, whose 36 league goals this season have been crucial for Bayern, will be central to their hopes of progressing to the semi-finals. The result in Madrid provides a crucial advantage, but Kane and his teammates are aware the tie is far from over.
