Bayer Leverkusen have decided to part ways with manager Kasper Hjulmand at the end of the current Bundesliga season, according to a report from Bild. The club will reportedly allow the Danish coach to see out his contract through Saturday’s match against Hamburger SV, which will be his final game in charge.
Reports suggesting Hjulmand’s departure have circulated for some time, but Bild claims Leverkusen have now finalized their decision. The move comes after a disappointing season for Die Werkself, who are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League despite previously holding a strong position.
Leverkusen suffered a significant setback in their pursuit of European football on Saturday, losing 3-1 to VfB Stuttgart. This result leaves them sixth in the Bundesliga table with one match remaining, three points behind both Hoffenheim and Stuttgart, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spots. While mathematically still possible to qualify, Leverkusen’s chances are slim.
Hjulmand took over at Leverkusen in the summer of 2021, succeeding Peter Bosz. He previously managed in Denmark with Nordsjælland and Midtjylland, achieving success in the Danish Superliga with the latter. During his tenure, he oversaw a period of transition at Leverkusen, bringing in several young players and implementing a possession-based style of play.
Despite moments of promise, Hjulmand was unable to consistently deliver results in the Bundesliga. Leverkusen have often been criticized for their inconsistency, failing to capitalize on their attacking talent. The club will now begin the search for a new manager to lead them forward, hoping to secure a return to the Champions League in the coming seasons. The departure of Hjulmand signals a clear intent to reset and pursue a different tactical direction.
This managerial change is expected to trigger a period of squad evaluation at Leverkusen, with several players potentially facing uncertain futures as the club aims to rebuild and compete at the highest level.
