Chelsea have been advised to make a move for Manchester City defender John Stones when his contract expires this summer, according to former England international Glenn Hoddle. Speaking on TNT Sports’ The Breakdown, Hoddle highlighted the need for experienced players at Stamford Bridge and believes Stones, 31, would be a valuable addition.
Stones, along with teammate Bernardo Silva, has announced his departure from the Etihad at the end of the current season. While a return to Everton has been previously reported as a possibility, Hoddle believes Chelsea should be at the forefront of any pursuit. He described Stones as a “good character” and a “good player still,” suggesting he would bring a positive influence to the dressing room.
Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott echoed Hoddle’s sentiments, stating that Stones’s experience and trophy-winning pedigree would command respect within the Chelsea squad. Lescott believes the centre-back would be an “easy sell” to the current group of players, given his success with City.
Hoddle also used the platform to criticize the BlueCo ownership’s handling of Thomas Tuchel’s departure in September 2022, claiming interference led to the manager’s exit and ultimately harmed the club. He suggested a current “disillusionment” exists within the Chelsea playing squad regarding the club’s leadership.
Chelsea are currently preparing for the FA Cup final against Manchester City, where they are considered underdogs. Hoddle expressed doubt about Chelsea’s ability to compete with City given their current form and mentality. Meanwhile, the club are reportedly in advanced talks with Xabi Alonso to become their new head coach, though several other candidates remain under consideration, including Andoni Iraola.
