Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has indicated that the future of sporting director Max Eberl at the club is not yet secure, despite his positive impact on recent player recruitment. Speaking to Der Spiegel, Hoeneß stated that the chances of Eberl signing a contract extension are currently at 60-40, acknowledging existing doubts surrounding the director’s long-term position.
Eberl’s current contract is set to expire in June 2027, and Bundesliga regulations prevent contract negotiations from beginning until one year prior to that date. Hoeneß deferred detailed discussion of the potential extension to Bayern’s supervisory board, stating that their August meeting will determine whether Eberl will continue to lead the club’s football operations.
Eberl joined Bayern in February 2024, having previously served as sporting director at RB Leipzig. His arrival followed a period of upheaval at the Bavarian giants, with the club seeking stability in its leadership structure after the departure of Hasan Salihamidžić. Since taking the role, Eberl has overseen the signings of players like Harry Kane, who has quickly become a key figure in the Bayern squad, and has been widely praised for strengthening the team’s overall quality.
Hoeneß was quick to acknowledge Eberl’s contributions to Bayern’s recent successes, specifically highlighting his role in player recruitment. The club secured the Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season, and Eberl’s work in assembling the squad was considered instrumental in that achievement. However, Hoeneß’s comments suggest that other factors are also being considered as the club evaluates its long-term strategy.
The supervisory board’s decision will likely hinge on a comprehensive assessment of Eberl’s performance and his alignment with the club’s future vision. A failure to agree on an extension could potentially lead to a search for a new sporting director, disrupting the continuity that Bayern has sought to establish since Eberl’s appointment. The outcome of the August meeting will be closely watched by fans and observers of the Bundesliga.
