TSG Hoffenheim are currently the frontrunners to sign Patrick Wimmer from VfL Wolfsburg, according to Sky Germany. The 25-year-old Austrian international is available for a reported €10 million due to a relegation clause in his contract following Wolfsburg’s demotion from the Bundesliga. Talks between Hoffenheim and Wimmer’s representatives have already begun, with sources indicating a growing sense of optimism that a deal can be finalized.
Wimmer joined Wolfsburg from Austria Vienna in the summer of 2021, initially making a positive impact with his pace and direct running. However, his form dipped during the recent season, contributing to Wolfsburg’s ultimately unsuccessful fight against relegation. He finished the campaign with five goals and two assists in 28 Bundesliga appearances, a return that nonetheless attracted attention from several clubs.
Eintracht Frankfurt and Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion have also expressed interest in acquiring Wimmer, adding competition to Hoffenheim’s pursuit. Frankfurt are preparing for another season of European football following their Champions League qualification, while Brighton continue to bolster their squad under manager Roberto De Zerbi. However, Hoffenheim’s proactive approach appears to have placed them in a favorable position.
Wimmer has also been named in Austria’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, providing him with a platform to showcase his abilities on the international stage before a potential move. He has earned 15 caps for his country, scoring three goals. Wolfsburg will be looking to rebuild their squad following relegation, and Wimmer’s departure would free up space in the team and generate funds for new signings.
Should Hoffenheim secure the transfer, Wimmer would likely slot into their attacking line, offering versatility across multiple positions. The move represents a chance for Wimmer to reignite his career and continue playing in the Bundesliga, while Hoffenheim would add a promising talent to their ranks as they aim to establish themselves as a consistent top-half side.
