Hoffenheim climbed to fourth place in the Bundesliga, at least temporarily, after securing a 2-1 victory over Hamburger SV on Saturday. Goals from Felix Asllani and Tim Lemperle proved decisive for the hosts, who moved above Stuttgart ahead of their rivals' Sunday fixture, while Hamburg's winless run extended to ten league games.
Despite the final score, Hamburg presented a significant challenge in the early exchanges, showing marked improvement from their recent form. Their efforts were undone, however, by Hoffenheim's clinical edge. The opening goal came from Felix Asllani, who finished brilliantly from a Vladimir Coufal delivery to reach double digits for goals in his debut Bundesliga season. The sought-after attacker had also scored in the reverse fixture, a 4-1 win for Hoffenheim back in November.
Hamburg found a route back into the match before halftime, albeit with a stroke of fortune. Robert Glatzel was brought down by Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann in a clear foul as the last man, but referee Robert Schröder opted not to show a red card. Glatzel converted the resulting penalty, scoring in consecutive Bundesliga games for the first time this season. The reprieve for Hoffenheim proved crucial, as Tim Lemperle restored the lead just before the interval, tapping in from close range for his eighth goal of the campaign.
The second half saw Christian Ilzer's Hoffenheim manage the game effectively, limiting Hamburg to few clear chances. Bakery Jatta missed one of the visitors' best opportunities, failing to hit the target with a free header. The result leaves Hamburg still five points clear of the relegation playoff spot, a margin maintained only by St. Pauli's concurrent loss.
For Hoffenheim, the victory consolidates their push for European qualification and highlights the continued impressive form of young attacker Felix Asllani. His growing goal tally in his first top-flight season will inevitably attract further transfer speculation in the coming months. Hamburg, meanwhile, must address their prolonged slump in form, with just one win in their last ten matches, if they are to secure their Bundesliga status comfortably.
