Hürzeler Admits Brighton Interest in Köln's Said El Mala
Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hürzeler has publicly confirmed the club's interest in 1. FC Köln's 19-year-old talent Said El Mala, describing the player as "exciting" while acknowledging the complexities of a potential transfer. The comments, made to Sky Germany, mark a rare public admission of interest from the Premier League club in the young German winger.
Reports have linked Brighton with a move for the teenage forward for several months, with some speculation also linking his older brother, Malek, with a move. Hürzeler, while praising the player, was keen to stress the current situation at Köln, who are in a fierce battle against relegation from the Bundesliga. "He is definitely a good player, an exciting player – but in the end, he is a player of 1. FC Köln," Hürzeler told Sky Germany. He added a note of caution, stating, "They are currently fighting against relegation, and therefore I think it is important to respect that."
Köln's sporting director, Thomas Kessler, provided an update on the situation, suggesting a transfer is not currently on the horizon. Speaking to Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, Kessler stated that there have been no serious offers for the player, who is under contract at the RheinEnergieStadion until 2030. "We are in very reliable and close communication with Said and his family," Kessler said. "As of now, we have not received an offer from another club that we would need to consider seriously. So far, the player himself has expressed no desire to enter talks with other clubs."
El Mala, who can operate as a winger or forward, is a product of Köln's youth academy and has broken into the first team this season, making 17 Bundesliga appearances. His performances have attracted attention, with Brighton's data-driven recruitment model known for identifying young talent. The Seagulls' interest aligns with their strategy of signing promising players before their value peaks. However, any move would require a significant fee, and with Köln in a relegation battle, the German club is under no financial pressure to sell a key asset.
For Brighton, the potential signing of El Mala represents a continuation of their model of investing in young, high-potential talent. Hürzeler's comments suggest the club is monitoring the situation but is respectful of Köln's precarious league position. The summer transfer window will be the first major test of the new head coach’s influence on recruitment, and El Mala appears to be a key target as the club prepares for the future. The player's long-term contract and Köln's firm stance, however, suggest any deal would require a substantial offer and the player's desire to move.
