- FC Köln are in talks to sign Gideon Mensah, the Ghana international left-back, on a free transfer, according to Sky Germany. The Bundesliga club are seeking to bolster their defensive options with the 27-year-old, whose contract with French side Auxerre recently expired. Negotiations are expected to progress further after Ghana’s participation in the ongoing World Cup concludes.
Mensah has been a regular feature for Ghana at the tournament in Qatar, starting all of their group stage matches and playing every minute of the campaign so far. He brings international experience to a Köln side that finished tenth in the Bundesliga last season. Prior to the World Cup, Mensah spent the 2022-23 season with Auxerre, making 30 appearances in Ligue 1 and contributing to their successful fight against relegation.
The move to Köln represents an opportunity for Mensah to return to one of Europe’s top five leagues after a productive spell in France. He previously spent time in Portugal with Vitória Guimarães and also had a loan spell at Bordeaux. Köln are looking for a replacement for Kristoffer Lund, whose loan deal with the club ended at the conclusion of last season, leaving a vacancy at left-back.
Köln have a history of developing and integrating African talent into their squad, and Mensah’s arrival would continue that trend. The club’s sporting director, Christian Keller, has previously spoken of the importance of adding players with a strong work ethic and tactical flexibility, qualities Mensah has demonstrated throughout his career. Securing Mensah on a free transfer would be a shrewd piece of business for Köln as they look to build on their mid-table finish.
