Leeds United have been identified as potential suitors for Chelsea striker Liam Delap this summer, according to journalist Simon Phillips. The 23-year-old forward is reportedly being allowed to leave Stamford Bridge after a disappointing first season with the Blues.
Delap joined Chelsea last summer in a £30 million deal from Ipswich Town, following a breakthrough campaign where he scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances. However, his time in London has been hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 11 Premier League starts and a single goal from 1000 minutes of action. Opta statistics reveal a concerning goal conversion rate of just three per cent and four missed big chances.
Chelsea are reportedly hoping to recoup their initial investment in Delap, ideally receiving £30 million, but are also open to a loan-to-buy arrangement. Leeds are among a number of clubs interested, with Everton, Newcastle, his former club Ipswich Town, and Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg also monitoring the situation. While Leeds have made contact with Chelsea, sources have yet to confirm a firm interest.
Leeds secured Premier League survival with three games to spare and are now focusing on strengthening their squad for next season. They previously missed out on Jorgen Strand Larsen in January, and are seeking cover and competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha. Lois Openda of Juventus has also been mentioned as a potential target.
Meanwhile, Leeds are set to miss out on midfielder Joao Gomes, who is nearing a £35 million move to Atletico Madrid. The club is prioritizing a new contract for captain Ethan Ampadu, with sources expressing confidence in securing his long-term future. Newcastle United are particularly keen on Delap, viewing him as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak, or an upgrade to their current forward options.
