Manchester United are continuing to pursue the transfer of Atalanta midfielder Ederson Silva, despite recent reports suggesting a potential collapse of the deal, according to TEAMtalk. The clubs agreed to a €45 million (£39m, $52m) fee for the 26-year-old Brazil international last month, and sources at Old Trafford are downplaying suggestions of a U-turn.
The final stages of the transfer are expected to progress quickly now that Ederson’s World Cup commitments have concluded, with a medical examination scheduled. Fabrizio Romano reported that Ederson is in England undergoing further medical tests, with a final decision from United pending the results of those tests.
This clarification follows speculation that United were growing hesitant about the transfer and exploring alternative targets. The club recently completed the signing of Andrey Santos from an undisclosed club for around £50 million, a move that occurred while awaiting final confirmation on the Ederson deal. Santos was reportedly a highly sought-after player, with interest from other Premier League clubs and teams in Saudi Arabia.
Manager Michael Carrick is reportedly keen to overhaul the midfield following Casemiro’s departure and a season-ending ACL injury to Manuel Ugarte. United are also monitoring Roma’s Manu Kone, with the player said to be interested in a move to the Premier League and Roma potentially willing to sell at the right price. The 25-year-old Frenchman made 37 appearances for Roma last season, contributing two goals and three assists.
United had previously expressed interest in Aurelien Tchouameni, but Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly decided to retain the midfielder and is expected to offer him a new contract until 2031. The addition of Ederson and potentially Kone would significantly strengthen United’s midfield options ahead of the new season, addressing a key area of concern for Carrick.
