Manchester United are preparing to increase their efforts to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the club’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, leading the charge. The move comes as United seek to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season, potentially losing Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte.
Fernandes has been a standout performer for West Ham despite their struggles this season, currently in the relegation zone with three games remaining. While the club are attempting to avoid relegation, Fernandes’ contributions have been consistently praised. United initially considered a move for Fernandes last summer when Southampton were relegated, but have now renewed their interest.
According to reports in The Telegraph, Wilcox is keen to finalize a deal quickly, however, they face competition from reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain, who are also monitoring the 21-year-old. West Ham are currently attempting to block all approaches for their key players, including Fernandes, Crysencio Summerville, and Jarrod Bowen, but their position will likely change if they are relegated from the Premier League.
Fernandes has publicly expressed his admiration for United captain Bruno Fernandes, citing him as a role model. He stated in an interview with O Jogo that he looks up to Bruno and attempts to learn from him, frequently watching him play in the Premier League. This existing connection could be a factor in swaying Fernandes towards a move to Old Trafford. Representatives of PSG have already made contact with the player, who recently earned his first senior cap for Portugal. A successful transfer would add further depth to United’s midfield options and potentially create a dynamic partnership alongside Bruno Fernandes.
