Manchester United are continuing negotiations with West Ham United for midfielder Mateus Fernandes, though their initial offer falls short of the London club’s valuation, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. United have already secured Atalanta’s Ederson and are aiming to add further reinforcements to their midfield following Casemiro’s departure and the potential sale of Manuel Ugarte.
Previous pursuits of Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali have been abandoned due to the associated costs, shifting United’s focus firmly towards Fernandes. The Portuguese international is reportedly prioritizing a move to Old Trafford despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid. West Ham initially sought a fee in the region of £100 million, but are now believed to be willing to accept around £85 million.
Romano reported on his YouTube channel that United’s opening bid is under £85 million, and the club is seeking a more economical deal. This cautious approach reflects a desire to avoid “crazy transfer fees” and allows them to be “smart” in the market, especially having already completed the signing of Ederson. However, this strategy does leave them vulnerable to a potential hijack from PSG or Real Madrid.
The expectation remains that United will ultimately win the race for Fernandes, with Romano stating there will be “movement” on the player’s future in the coming days. Should a deal be agreed upon around £80 million, Fernandes would become the fourth-most expensive signing in Manchester United’s history, trailing only Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, and Antony. For West Ham, the transfer would represent their second-largest sale, surpassed only by Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal.
In addition to their pursuit of Fernandes, United have also enquired about West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, who is valued at approximately £50 million. However, they may face competition from Tottenham Hotspur, who are also considering Summerville as an alternative option should their pursuit of Savinho fall through.
