Newcastle United have identified a new goalkeeper as ‘one of their first priorities’ this summer, with Manchester City’s James Trafford topping a three-player shortlist according to reports from The Telegraph. The search for reinforcements comes after inconsistent performances from current options Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale, the latter currently on loan from Southampton.
Pope has struggled with a groin injury impacting his distribution, while both goalkeepers have been prone to high-profile errors throughout the season. Although Newcastle previously considered making Ramsdale’s loan permanent, concerns over his presence in the box during set pieces and a perceived lack of crucial saves have prompted the club to seek alternative options.
Trafford was previously close to joining Newcastle last summer, with a £27 million fee agreed with Burnley before Manchester City exercised a buy-back clause to bring him to the Etihad Stadium. However, the England international has found his opportunities limited following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Newcastle believe he would be open to a move to St. James’ Park. The club are wary of entering another protracted bidding war, with interest also reported from Chelsea, Tottenham and Aston Villa.
Alongside Trafford, Newcastle are also monitoring Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser, a 21-year-old who offers a commanding presence and strong distribution skills. The club have been tracking Risser throughout the season, though reports suggest a fee has not yet been agreed with the Ligue 1 side. Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is the third confirmed target, with Newcastle’s coaching staff impressed by his passing range and command of the box, despite conceding a goal to the Netherlands international during their recent 3-1 victory. Brighton are expected to demand a fee of around £50 million for Verbruggen.
Newcastle may initially integrate a new signing alongside Pope, allowing time for adaptation to the Premier League, or potentially install a new arrival as their first-choice goalkeeper immediately if they impress during pre-season. The potential arrival of a new goalkeeper represents a significant step in Eddie Howe’s ongoing efforts to solidify the team’s defensive foundations.
